Adelaide to Swan Hill |
Monday, 25 August 2014 |
Bruce and I set off for Swan Hill via Glenelg, Mount Lofty, Hahndorf and Langhorne Creek. We bought some wine (and some beetroot and horseradish relish) from the Potts' Bleasdale winery on Langhorne Creek Road, and Newman's Horseradish Farm and Rusticana Winery on Lake Plains Road. We then missed a turnoff and ended up seeing far more of the area than originally planned. After passing the horseradish farm for a second time, we eventually found our way to the car ferry over the Murray at Wellington.
We followed the aptly named Mallee Highway (mile after mile of straight road surrounded by mallee scrub) until it joined the Murray Valley Highway. As we were nearing Swan Hill that night, there was a strange incident with a truck we had been following at quite some distance. It appeared to turn right, but apparently he had left the road, made his way back across the road, and ended up 'parked' in a field to the left. In crossing the road, he created a very dense 'fog' bank. It was dark, but the truck appeared ok, so we just travelled on. However, later an ambulance with lights and sirens passed us coming from Swan Hill, so I hope the driver was ok.
