Port Macquarie to Ballina |
We had glorious weather until late afternoon when it rained heavily as we were going into Ballina. There were lots of roadwords on the highway for miles and miles.
We started the day driving around Port Macquarie, going to various lookouts to see beaches and the Hastings River. We then went to Nambucca Heads via Kempsey and had lunch at the Bookshop Cafe on the top of the hill in Nambucca. We then drove out to the headland to the Rotary and Captain Cook Lookouts.
After Nambucca, we made out way back to the highway, and continued through Coffs Harbour (past the motel where Mum had stayed with Dad). We detoured to go through Woolgoolga, past the Sikh temple that sits on the hill.
After Grafton there were long stretches alongside the Clarence River. After crossing the Clarence and Richmond Rivers, we were approaching Ballina and it was absolutely tipping down and very dark, even though it was only around 4:30. We managed to find the Coast Inn Motel on River Street and had toast in the motel room for dinner.
